Child Abuse and Neglect
Sutter Children's Center
Unfortunately, not every child who comes to Children's Center at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento is dealing with a condition caused by an illness, birth defect or accident. When an infant, child or teenager has been seriously neglected or physically or sexually abused, they need the compassionate care and support of experts able to treat the mental, as well as, physical damage.
Children's Center is fortunate to be able to offer dedicated care under a multidisciplinary team of pediatric specialists and subspecialists that includes Angela J Rosas, M.D., a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Child Abuse and Neglect. Dr. Rosas is trained to help her colleagues detect shaken baby syndrome, sexual abuse, and other abuse-related conditions. In addition, she works with other specialists to provide expert, empathetic care, including noninvasive gynecological examinations.
When a child abuse victim comes to us, a team of physicians, nurses, social workers, and our Child Life Services specialists mobilizes to provide the warmth and care the child needs to begin the journey of healing.
As a nonprofit, community health care system, Sutter also takes an active role in reaching out to the community with educational training and support for professionals, parents and educators on child abuse and neglect, domestic violence and other related topics.
Additional information is available in our Healthwise health information sections on child abuse, domestic violence, Munchausen syndrome by proxy and shaken baby syndrome. Also see the federal government's Child Welfare Information Gateway and the National Library of Medicine's MedlinePlus® section on Child Abuse.
Children need caring adults to protect them. If you suspect a child is being neglected or abused, please contact your local sheriff's department.
