Sleep Center
Children's Center at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento
A good night's sleep is vital to a child's ability to grow and learn. Many children suffer from conditions that affect their ability to rest properly, which can cause mental and behavior problems, as well as medical conditions. To understand why a child is not sleeping properly, Sutter Children's Services provides a sleep center designed for children. The sleep center performs diagnostic services to locate behavioral and physical causes of sleeplessness and work with the family on a treatment plan.
Conditions explored include:
- Behavioral problems
- Circadian rhythm disorders
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Narcolepsy
- Nightmares
- Parasomnias
- Restless-leg syndrome
- Sleep apnea
- Sleep walking
Sleep studies are performed on infants through adolescents and may include an overnight stay accompanied by a parent. Once the cause is pinpointed, pediatric neurologists, pediatric surgeons, and other specialists provide a treatment plan that addresses the cause appropriately.
Examples of sleep disorder symptoms in children:
- Is your child tired and sleepy during the day?
- Does your child stay awake in bed, unable to fall asleep?
- Does your child have difficulty paying attention during the day?
- Does your child snore regularly?
- Does the child have nightmares, excessive night time awakenings or poor sleep quality?
- Does the child have leg discomfort while falling asleep?
- Does your child shake, move or twitch excessively when asleep?
- Does your child suffer from daily headaches or dizziness with no other identifiable medical problems?
See a sleep specialist when childhood sleep disorders are interfering with the family’s or the child’s daytime activities or the child’s sleep problems are a cause of distress to the child or the family.
