Pediatric Intensive Care

When a child is ill or injured, Children's Center 20-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) stands ready to provide medical and emotional support to families in crisis. Exceptional staff resources are the heart of the PICU. The California Children's Services (CCS) approved program provides the expertise of five pediatric intensivists and more than 25 pediatric subspecialists who serve more than 1,300 patients each year and offer consultations and advice to physicians across Northern California. Many of the subspecialists affiliated with the PICU are nationally recognized in their field. Specifically trained nursing staff further enhances the level of care. Each nurse chosen for the unit undergoes extensive pediatric training. The PICU provides state-of-the-art care for all medical and surgical conditions, with the exception of multiple trauma. The unit is one of the only facilities in the state to offer pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and high-frequency ventilation. Full medical transport staffed by a trained and experienced team serves the 23-county reach of the PICU.Families gain the support of a team dedicated to ensuring that young patients are cared for with their unique needs in mind and families are encouraged to remain with the child as much as possible.
