Pediatric Bronchoscopy
Sutter Children's Services
Children's Center at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento is the only hospital in the Sacramento area where an infant or child with persistent respiratory problems can receive bronchoscopy. Performed on either an inpatient or outpatient basis, bronchoscopy involves inserting a tiny, flexible tube into the airway. The procedure takes only minutes to perform with the child comfortably sedated or anesthetized. Pediatric intensivists, (doctors who specialize in critical care medicine for children), can evaluate a child's airway during this procedure to determine the cause of noisy breathing. A pediatrician or lung specialist generally refers children. Pediatric nurses, respiratory care practitioners and child life specialists, all work with the child and family to ease their anxiety. The pediatric intensivists work in close collaboration with surgical specialists.
