Know the Signs

Here are some tips from Michael G. Chez, M.D., Director of Pediatric Neurology at Sutter Neuroscience Institute.
Symptoms:
- Child cannot sit still during class, homework, or group activities or talks excessively in school.
- Child shows inability to complete classroom work or homework without repeated supervision
- Impulse control problems with behavior
- Child may frequently get hurt or have accidents
- Child gets into frequent trouble for not following rules or acts like class clown
- Difficulty keeping friends
- Child loses important items or homework regularly
- Trouble controlling loudness or acting disruptive in school or church type setting.
- Recurrent automobile accidents in teens
- Have to ask repeatedly for child to do something, or child seems overly forgetful
Children with ADD or ADHD often can sit for television, computer games, and Lego® type construction toys. They cannot do other tasks as well.
See a doctor when:
- These behaviors interfere with success at home or school
- Social problems arise from these issues
