It's a great big world in there
Our parents didn't have to worry about Internet predators or pornography Web sites, but they also couldn't give us fast and easy access to the Internet's vast information resources. The task for today's parent is to strike the balance between the Internet's good and its dangers by providing guidance and making use of the tools available.
Fortunately, there are free and low-cost tools available for PC and Mac users. Among those, Microsoft offers a free Family Safety service through Windows Live (www.getlive.com) and Apple (www.apple.com) offers kid-safe browsers.
There are also experts who can help you meet the Internet-safety challenge, including:
- The Federal of Investigation: http://www.fbi.gov/fbikids.htm
- Wired with Wisdom: www.webwisekids.org
- i-Safe: www.isafe.org
- NetSmartz Workshop: www.netsmartz.org
