Dance/Movement Therapy
Sutter Center for Integrative Health
Because dance involves the direct expression of one's self through one's body, it provides an especially intimate and powerful medium for therapy. Based upon the assumption that the body and mind are interrelated, dance/movement therapy is defined as "the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process that furthers the emotional and physical integration of the individual." Dance/movement therapy has been shown to be of benefit in the treatment and rehabilitation of people with emotional and psychological issues, and in particular in conditions such as chronic pain, circulatory disorders, sexual abuse, and cancer recovery.
