herbal medicineHerbal medicine is the most ancient form of health care known to humankind. Just as herbs have been used for millennia by many cultures, there are many systems of herbal medicine, including Chinese and Western herbal treatment. Recently there has been a worldwide resurgence in interest in the use of herbs to treat a plethora of illnesses and to maintain health. Therapeutic herbs can be defined as any plant part or parts used to make medicine, can be taken in many forms, including raw, juiced, tinctured, infused (teas), powdered, extracted, topically as lotions or ointments, or inhaled as essential oils (aromatherapy). Although in general herbs tend to have milder effects than pharmaceutical medications, skilled herbal therapists help to avoid interactions and side effects that can occur, and to assure the effectiveness of the herbal preparations selected for use.
