Strokes change the lives of patients and families. Even when there are no lasting effects, those affected by stroke become aware of the vulnerability. More often, because strokes are the leading cause of disability in adults, strokes create widespread ripples of impact across many lives. To provide information and help cope with the changes and stress, Sutter Stroke Center offers patients and their families a number of education and support programs.

Stroke Support Group for Patients and Caregivers
Every first and third Thursday of the month, from 11:00 - 12:30 p.m., the Sutter Stroke Center provides a Stroke Support Group for stroke survivors and caregivers facilitated by a registered nurse and chaplain. The Stroke Support Group provides a forum for education, discussion, problem solving, and support for survivors of stroke and caregivers. There is no charge for attendance and referrals are not necessary. Please call (916) 454-6979 for more information.

Stroke Camp

Each year, Sutter Stroke Center sponsors its popular Stroke Camp for stroke survivors and caregivers. Activities at the camp include stroke education, fun and games, dancing, physical, speech, and occupational therapy and time for relaxation. The camp offers a swimming pool and a variety of outdoor activities including tennis, horseshoes, volleyball, basketball, hiking and more. For additional information on the camp and costs or to register, please call the Sutter Stroke Center at (888) 287-2270.

Stroke Prevention Forum
The Sutter Stroke Center offers a quarterly Stroke Prevention Forum to the community on stroke prevention and treatment. The forum's guest speakers include doctors, nurses, therapists, and other healthcare professionals, as well as community members. Speakers provide insight into the brain's anatomy, the process of cerebrovascular disease, reducing your risk of stroke, stroke signs and symptoms, stroke treatments, and the latest research findings and outpatient clinical trials. Sessions alternate quarterly between morning and evening times. For more information, please call (916) 454-6979.

Additional Information
Like heart disease, stroke is a disease of the blood vessels that can often be prevented through proper control of weight, diabetes, blood pressure, stress and cholesterol. Sutter offers a number of classes, support groups and special events aimed at controlling the risk factors for cardiovascular disease available throughout the Greater Sacramento area. To find out more, see Classes & Support Groups.
